Vicopisano (how to reach it) is a beautiful medieval village. One of the best ways to visit it, is to walk along its lanes admiring from close its impressive monuments. Visiting Vicopisano is like going back to Middle Age…just think that a good 9 towers are still present in its historical centre, which date back from the 11th to the 15th century and represent a real collection of medieval buildings, and an example of the time when the ‘Tower, was the symbol of the power of a family. Furthermore, going along the walls, one can still see 4 cylindrical towers that were used for the strategic defence of the walls themselves.
Beside the churches currently present in Vicopisano and its surroundings, we know by many documents that in Middle Ages this area was much richer in religious buildings than in our time.

It rose on a vast area called “Campo di Santa Maria (Saint Mary’s field), which belonged almost entirely to the Archbishop of Pisa and was used as the market place.
